How to disable Cloudflare Proxy for Sign Customiser

Updated this week

If you're seeing errors when trying to connect Sign Customiser to your website, and your domain is protected by Cloudflare, it could be because Cloudflare's security features are blocking the connection. This is actually Cloudflare doing its job—protecting your site from automated requests. However, Sign Customiser needs to be able to connect automatically to work properly.

The good news is you can easily fix this by creating a special rule that tells Cloudflare to allow Sign Customiser through. Don't worry—this won't affect your site's security for regular visitors.

How do I know if my site is behind a Cloudflare proxy?

When logged into your Cloudflare account, look for the "A" or "CNAME" DNS record that points to your website. Usually this is something like "www" or "@" or even "yourdomain.com". If there is an orange cloud next to the DNS record, your website is behind Cloudflare's proxy.

How to Fix This

If you do not want the protection Cloudflare offers, you can simply disable the proxy by clicking "edit" on the record and then toggling off the orange cloud.

If you'd like to keep the Cloudflare protection, you can follow these steps below to create a rule in Cloudflare to allow Sign Customiser to bypass the bot detection:

Step 1: Log Into Cloudflare

Go to cloudflare.com and sign in with your email and password.

Step 2: Select Your Website

Once you're logged in, you'll see a list of your websites. Click on the website where you're trying to use Sign Customiser.

Step 3: Open the Security Rules Section

On the left side of your screen, look for a menu. Find and click on "Security", then click on "Security Rules".

Step 4: Create a New Rule

Look for a button that says "Create rule" and click it. Then click the dropdown item that says "Custom rules".

Step 5: Name Your Rule

At the top, you'll see a box asking for a rule name. Type something like:

Allow Sign Customiser

Step 6: Set Up the Condition

You'll see a section that asks when this rule should apply. This is where you tell Cloudflare to look for Sign Customiser specifically.

  1. In the first dropdown, select "User Agent"

  2. In the second dropdown, select "contains"

  3. In the text box, type: SignCustomiser

Step 7: Choose the Action

Below the condition you just set up, you'll see a section asking what action to take.

In the dropdown menu, select "Skip" and then choose to skip at least "All remaining custom rules" AND "Browser Integrity Check". There are more options you may consider checking in the image below, experiment as needed.

Step 8: Save Your Rule

Click the "Deploy" or "Save" button at the bottom of the page.

That's It!

Your rule is now active. Try setting up your Sign Customiser integration again—it should work without any errors now.

Still Having Issues?

If you're still seeing errors after following these steps:

  • Wait 2-3 minutes after saving the rule, as changes can take a moment to apply

  • Double-check that you typed SignCustomiser exactly as shown (with capital S and C)

  • Make sure you selected the correct website in Step 2

  • Contact Sign Customiser support—they can help verify your setup

What Did This Do?

In simple terms: you created a special permission that tells Cloudflare "whenever you see a connection from Sign Customiser, let it through without any extra security checks." This allows Sign Customiser to communicate with your website while Cloudflare continues protecting you from everything else.
